Strangely, moon farming is a lot like cryptocurrency mining. And that’s why I’m okay with the state of this sub.

It suddenly clicked for me.

The proof of work (PoW) mechanism for Btc is that the mining computer that hit the jackpot for running the correct dice roll (hashing) could get the sweet sweet reward of 6.25 coins. The higher the hash rate that miner has, the more likely it will get the correct roll.

Isn’t it a lot like getting moon for karma? Posters know a general direction of what the sub wants to see, but getting tons of upvotes take some luck and a degree of randomness. Posting more could mean more chances to get karma it is a lot by chance. And man isn’t it a lot of work.

The analogy doesn’t stop here. If you don’t feel like having enough hash power to generate karma by OC, you could always jump on a popular post and comment, much like joining a mining pool if you have inferior hardware.

Looking even wider, the early days of moon farming with memes was like the early days of crypto when you could mine with crappy laptops. Then the mining difficulty was adjusted and now memes are not allowed, much like how later on mining required GPUs and then dedicated hashing ASICs. Similarly despite many users are still not satisfied with the state of this sub, the post quality is in fact improving (since the inception of moons).

It brings some perspectives for me for the status quo:

  1. some of the value of Moon comes from the fact this is a weird PoW mechanism. Community participation and attention is in fact a scarce resource
  2. if you are not satisfied with the state of the sub, that’s not (entirely) Moon’s fault. Deep inside, it reflects what the community wants to see. But I believe it could improve OC quality much like difficulty adjustment in crypto.

Just my two cents, what do you think?

edit: thank you kind stranger for award lol
